The Brentford Canoe Club has returned from the National Sprint Regatta in Nottingham with medals and momentum, just months after its formation. The club aims to introduce young people from the local area to the sport of Sprint Canoe—a fast-paced, Olympic-style paddlesport—and has already begun to make its mark on the national stage.

The club was established through a partnership between Paddle UK, the London Borough of Hounslow’s Thriving Communities Team, and a group of committed parents and volunteers. Its goal is to create accessible pathways into paddlesports for children of all abilities, particularly those with limited exposure to water-based activities. The initiative has quickly grown into a vibrant community hub, offering training, competition opportunities, and a sense of belonging for local families.

Coach Danny Mavra, who led the team to Nottingham, praised the young paddlers for their determination and teamwork. “Every single one of them rose to the challenge and gave their very best,” he said. “To see them not only compete but win their events is a huge achievement—especially for a brand-new club.”

Many of the children involved had previously participated in water-based activities through the Green Dragon programme and other local initiatives. Their transition into competitive Sprint Canoe has been supported by regular training sessions and a growing network of community support centred around Brentford Community Boat House.

Parents have noted the positive impact of the club on their children’s confidence, fitness, and social development. “It’s given the children teamwork skills and a real sense of purpose,” said one parent. “They’re learning to support each other and push themselves in a completely new environment.”
