Partial Closures On Hammersmith Flyover

Part of the final phase of the refurbishment

Transport for London Transport for London (TfL) has appointed Costain to upgrade the central reservation and drainage as part of the final phase of strengthening and refurbishing the Hammersmith Flyover.

Why is this work being done?
The installation of new central reservation and drainage will ensure that surface water is drained more effectively to stop corrosion of the flyover and to prepare for works to waterproof and resurface the deck in Summer 2014.

How will this effect drivers?
To allow for this work to be carried out, since 2 January until Summer 2014 the width of all carriageway lanes on the flyover have been reduced with safety barriers being installed.

TfL say that this will allow personnel to work safely and also allow the majority of the noisy works, such as breaking concrete, to be carried out during the day. This will reduce noise and traffic disruption in the local area.

To further reduce noise TfL;

• plan to carry out the majority of the noisy activities during the day

• where practical, they say they will use the quietest equipment available

• and where possible, screen work areas with sound barriers

From Wednesday 15 January between 22:30 to 05:00 TfL will be removing the materials broken out during the day from the central reserve for three nights. However, there are small sections of the central reservation that can only be broken out at night time to ensure the safety of personnel and road users. These works will commence on the night of Saturday 20 January 2014 from 22:30 to 05:00 for 10 nights. In this instance they will use an enclosed sound barrier to minimise noise as much as possible, however it is likely that some noise will be audible due to the nature of the works.

Partial closure
During the works to upgrade the central reservation and carriageway lanes, we will need to close the flyover in one direction regularly between 22:30 and 05:00 road users will be diverted traffic via the local roads underneath the flyover structure. These closures will allow additional works to be carried out, as well as allow materials to be safely delivered and collected from the flyover deck. Occasional night time closures on the roads below the flyover will also be required to facilitate the works.

Upcoming works
Works to strengthen and refurbish the Hammersmith flyover are scheduled until Summer 2015.

Between June and September 2014, it will be necessary to carry out a limited number of weekend closures in one direction to carry out concrete repairs, replace the waterproofing and resurface the flyover deck. TfL will update local residents with more information about upcoming works in advance.
