The Worshipful The Mayor of the London Borough of Hounslow, Councillor Paul Lynchadds that “There is definitely a confessional side to any landlord’s duties, and the best clergy always bear in mind the text “It is a poor heart that never rejoices.” I have often as a Councillor been alerted or introduced to someone I was able to help because they had started talking to their local priest or publican. In those cases the conversation has usually helped structure and define the problem. I have once or twice suggested that religion might help when people come to me with difficulties that are beyond man’s resolving. I have never actually suggested to a constituent that a pint in to local might do more than a Councillor’s intervention, maybe I should. After all, as the poet says:

“Malt does more than Milton can to justify God’s ways to man.”
