Aims to Support young people with complex needs
October 8, 2025 West Thames College, in partnership with the London Borough of Hounslow, has launched a new Independence Hub at its Isleworth campus to support young people with Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities (PMLD) and Severe Learning Disabilities (SLD). The facility officially opened on 7 October 2025, marking a significant step in the borough’s efforts to expand inclusive education and transition support. Designed around the Preparing for Adulthood (PfA) framework, the Hub offers a person-centred curriculum focused on education, independence, community participation, and health. Students will engage in tailored activities that promote life skills, confidence, and progression into adulthood. Facilities include a purpose-built flat for developing independent living skills such as cooking and housekeeping, an on-site shop run in partnership with Tesco, and a charity shop offering work experience. The Hub also features sensory rooms, accessible outdoor spaces, and immersive learning environments, supported by trained staff including speech and language therapists and occupational therapists. Speaking at the launch, Marta Gajewska, CEO and Principal of West Thames College, said, “We believe every young person deserves the opportunity to thrive, no matter their starting point. This partnership with Hounslow Council transforms opportunities for those with the most complex needs.” Jane Pendrey, Curriculum Quality and Training Manager in Supported Learning, highlighted the importance of everyday achievements. She said, “Whether it’s making a meal, gaining work experience, or simply feeling safe and understood, these are the stepping stones to independence.” The Hub builds on West Thames College’s recent success, having been graded ‘Outstanding’ for its provision for High Needs Students in December 2024. It also aligns with Hounslow Council’s broader SEND improvement strategy, which aims to expand local provision and reduce reliance on out-of-borough placements. Councillor Samia Chaudhary, Cabinet Member for Education, Children, Skills, and Employment, described the Hub as evidence of progress. She said “Through effective collaboration, we’re creating new provision to support young people to develop the skills to live full and fulfilling lives.” The initiative is closely connected to the local community, with both partners working alongside families and external agencies to support smooth transitions into supported living, employment, or community-based activities.
