The launch of The Green Exchange at Brentford School for Girls this weekend drew a steady flow of residents who were keen to learn more about the Foundation Wellbeing Trust’s new sustainability programme.

Held on Saturday 28 March, the event introduced a series of initiatives designed to reduce waste, encourage practical environmental action and strengthen local connections. The launch was described as an opportunity “to discover how to live greener, connect with neighbours, and participate in local environmental initiatives,”.

Visitors were given an overview of the programme’s focus on everyday, achievable steps that can help build more resilient communities. Clothing and accessories swaps were presented as a central feature, offering a straightforward way for people to refresh their wardrobes while keeping usable items out of landfill. It was emphasised that this approach provides “a simple, cost-effective way to refresh their personal styles while keeping perfectly usable items out of local landfill,” a message that aligned with the conversations taking place among attendees.

Another major strand of the programme highlighted during the launch was the emphasis on upcycling. Coordinators explained that regular workshops will teach residents how to repair, reuse and creatively transform materials that might otherwise be discarded. The Trust described these sessions as a way to help people “view waste as a valuable resource rather than something to throw away,” and many visitors expressed interest in learning practical skills that combine environmental benefit with creativity.

The event also served as a recruitment point for volunteers. Project leads outlined the different ways residents could contribute, from helping to organise future swap events to assisting with workshops or supporting outreach. The launch created a relaxed setting for people to meet one another, share ideas and consider how they might take part in shaping the programme as it develops.

With the launch now completed, The Green Exchange moves into a full schedule of activities running through spring and summer, including creative workshops, swap events and a final showcase in July.

The Foundation Wellbeing Trust, described in its materials as “a community organisation dedicated to promoting sustainable living and building resilient neighbourhoods,” has positioned the programme as a long-term effort to make sustainability accessible, social and rooted in local wellbeing.
