Says four local practices will benefit from government money
June 6, 2025
Ruth Cadbury, MP for Brentford and Isleworth has welcomed an announcement of government investment in the refurbishment of GP surgeries. She says that the Plan for Change will significantly boost the number of appointments the practices will be able to handle. Out of more than 1,000 earmarked for further investment across the country, four local surgeries are expected to benefit. These are the Albany Practice and the Brentford Group Practice based in the Brentford Health Centre as well as Argyle Health Centre and Thornbury Road Centre for Health in Isleworth. The money being provided is intended to support the modernisation of outdated buildings with limiting working spaces. The government says the £102 million it has allocated represents the biggest public investment in GP facilities for five years It is another measure to try to shift care out of hospitals and into the community. The projects will be delivered during the 2025-26 financial year, with the first upgrades expected to begin in summer 2025. Although the government says that the programme will enable 8.3million extra appointments, a key bottleneck in the service remains staff. Without more GPs, nurses, and support staff, the number of additional appointments that can be offered is limited. In addition, some surgeries may see a temporary reduction in the number of appointments they can offer while construction is taking place. Ms Cadbury said, “Residents regularly tell me about their frustration after enduring the dreaded ‘8am scramble’ and the difficulty that they have in getting a GP appointment. At the last election I promised to fix GP services and bring back the family doctor. “I’m delighted that the Government is starting to deliver on that promise, with the recruitment of over 1,000 new GPs and extra funding for surgeries locally in Brentford and Isleworth. “Improving GP care helps free up pressures on other parts of our NHS and means people can get the care and support they need. I’m delighted that the Government are acting to protect our NHS and to give West London a fair deal.’’ Health and Social Care Secretary, Wes Streeting, added, “It will be a long road, but this government is putting in the work to fix our NHS and make it fit for the future. “These are simple fixes for our GP surgeries but for too long they were left to ruin, allowing waiting lists to build and stopping doctors treating more patients.”
