Nominations to be an election candidate in the forthcoming by-election for Brentford ward are due to close on 4pm on Friday 5 April.

Thus far we are aware of four people who have announced their intention to contest the seat vacated by Labour councillor Lara Parizotto who is stepping down for personal and work reasons. The by-election will take place at the same time as the Mayoral and Greater London Assembly elections on Thursday 2 May.

The Labour Party is looking to retain the seat with Emma Yates who contested the Chiswick Gunnersbury constituency unsuccessfully in the 2022 local elections and works part-time for Seema Malhotra the MP for Feltham & Heston.

Michael Denniss will be standing in the seat again for the Conservatives. He said, “I'm delighted and humbled to have been given the chance to serve Brentford West residents as the @CBIConservative councillor candidate.”

Former Labour Hounslow cabinet member and communications consultant, Theo Dennison, is standing as an independent. A fierce opponent of the current administration and party leadership he angered many of his former colleagues by criticising Steve Curran in a council meeting.

He said, “I am proud to live and work in Brentford and I pledge to work with you, our fellow residents, local businesses, and community organisations to get Brentford back on its feet – to respect and stand up for the views of Brentford’s residents and to do my utmost to clean up the council, reduce waste, and eliminate corruption.”

Hounslow Green Party has selected Freya Summersgill having already announced her as standing as its candidate for Brentford and Isleworth in the next general election.

She said, “As a local resident with a young family, I want to continue to build a stronger community where children thrive.

" I have volunteered with youth groups for more than 20 years, encouraging them to be an active part of their local community and to promote self-confidence and independence..

“I have been actively campaigning for environmental issues since childhood and will advocate the urgent local actions needed to prevent and adapt to the climate crisis. I have a PhD in civil engineering and I am passionate about designing sustainable buildings suitable for net zero construction. I use my professional knowledge and experience to respond to local developments, council policies and plans.”

At this stage no Liberal Democrat candidate has been announced. In the May 2022 contest in the ward, the party did not contest the seat as part of a deal with the Green Party. We have attempted to contact the Liberal Democrats locally to see if they will be putting forward a candidate.

Last time out Guy Lambert topped the poll with 1,183 votes with Ms Parizotto getting 1,119 to win the two seats four Labour. Stephen Clark came in third with 669 vote for the Greens and Michael Denniss received 410 for the Conservatives with his party colleague Zoe Nixon receiving 392. Independent candidate Bob Ayres received 226 votes.

Supporters of Theo Dennison point to his good showing in the Syon and Brentford Lock ward election in May 2022 when he stood as an independent and received 822, less than 200 votes behind the third Labour candidate Balraj Sarai. However there was a much larger gap to the other two Labour councillors elected, Dan Bowring and Katherine Dunne.

Registered electors in the Brentford West ward who are British, Irish, European Union or qualifying Commonwealth citizens and are 18 years old or older on Thursday 2 May 2024 can vote in the by-election.

You must register to vote by Tuesday 16 April and Wednesday 17 April is the last day you can apply for and return your postal vote application or make amendments to any existing voting arrangements. Wednesday 24 April is the last day you can apply for a Voter Authority Certificate, if you do not have an accepted form of photo ID.
