Party denies action against Guy Lambert is related to Zionism motion
October 22, 2026 Brentford West councillor Guy Lambert has been suspended from the Green Group on the council and removed as its leader. He was informed about the action on Wednesday evening (21 October) A Green Party spokesperson confirmed that Cllr Lambert had been suspended from the group and no longer served as its leader, but said the decision was unrelated to a controversial motion on Zionism debated within the party. “His suspension has nothing to do with the ‘Zionism is Racism’ motion or his views on it. Any suggestion otherwise is incorrect,” the spokesperson said. “Guy did not attend conference or vote on the motion.” In his weekly update on BrentfordTW8.com last week he had commented that none of the group agreed with the motion passed at the party conference earlier in the month which equated Zionism with racism but that it had been agreed that it would be put to a vote of local party members. He commented at the time, “The refreshing thing is I can report this without any fear of upsetting a whip or leader (we have neither in Hounslow Greens) which is a bit of a change for me!” The party spokesperson said the decision had been taken in accordance with Green Party policy, following consultation with relevant stakeholders within the party. The party declined to discuss any individual complaints publicly, citing the confidentiality of those involved and the need to ensure a fair process. Cllr Lambert said he had been informed by fellow Green councillor Rick Rowe shortly before 6pm on Wednesday about the action being taken against him. He had been elected to lead the group on Hounslow Council after the elections in May. He claimed that the decision had been communicated to council officers before he was informed and that his seat in the council chamber had been moved ahead of that evening’s council meeting. He said he had asked the council’s chief executive what authority had been used to implement the change, and was seeking clarification about the reasons for the decision, the process followed and the appointment of a successor. Cllr Lambert said he remained a member of the Green Party of England and Wales and continued to support its values and most of its policies. He said he would continue to regard himself as group leader until the circumstances of his removal and the election of a replacement were confirmed to him. Guy Lambert left the Labour Party in early 2025, after being suspended from the Hounslow Labour Group in November 2024. He subsequently joined the Green Party in November 2025, after a period as an independent councillor. The reasons were primarily a dispute over his public criticism of Hounslow Labour's handling of local issues and what he regarded as shortcomings in the party's internal democracy. In a separate statement made online, Cllr Rowe described Cllr Lambert as a former colleague and confirmed that he was the group’s new coordinator. He said an internal process needed to take place and declined to comment further. The Green Party spokesperson said any complaints relating to a member’s conduct would be considered through the party’s internal disciplinary procedures. “To protect the confidentiality of everyone involved and the fairness of the process, we will not discuss individual complaints publicly,” the spokesperson said. The party has not publicly detailed the complaints, if any, that led to the suspension, or explained the specific steps followed in reaching the decision.
