Residents' group says safety upgrades are urgently needed

Cyclists and community advocates are calling for immediate action to improve the condition and safety of the A4 cycle path, citing uneven surfaces, debris, and hazardous junctions that pose risks to vulnerable road users.
The petition, launched by the Osterley & Wyke Green Residents’ Association (OWGRA), highlights concerns that while significant investment is being directed toward Cycle Superhighway 9—currently under construction between Hammersmith and Hounslow—the existing A4 cycle path between Cranford and Chiswick remains neglected. Campaigners argue that the route, which runs parallel to the Great West Road, is a vital commuter corridor and should meet the same safety and maintenance standards as newer infrastructure.
According to the petition, cyclists frequently encounter broken glass, litter, and uneven surfacing, which can lead to punctures or force riders into the adjacent traffic lane. At several junctions, including Gillette Corner, the cycle path reportedly disappears altogether, requiring cyclists to dismount or merge with fast-moving vehicles.
The petition outlines four key demands:
- Resurfacing the cycle path to ensure a smooth and safe ride.
- Regular sweeping and maintenance to remove debris.
- Improved junction infrastructure to support safe crossings.
- Enhanced safety at bus stops, including clearer markings and better separation between cyclists and passengers.
Advocates argue that these changes are essential to encourage active travel and reduce reliance on motor vehicles, particularly in light of London’s broader transport and climate goals. The A4 corridor is also identified in strategic planning documents, including the Golden Mile Outcome Plan and the A4 Strategic Transport Study, as a priority area for future transport improvements.
Despite repeated calls for action, Transport for London (TfL) has not confirmed any immediate plans to upgrade the A4 cycle path. A request for comment from TfL regarding the petition and future maintenance of the route received no response at the time of publication.
The petition remains open to signatures at OWGRA’s campaign page.
