This week has seen the £1.5m repair project to Putney Bridge continue to make good progress with attention now focusing on completing the installation of new pavements on both sides of the bridge.

The finishing touches are being made to the footpath on the western side of the bridge, while on the eastern side a solid new concrete base has been laid to support its new paving stones.

New access ladders that lead deep into its internal structure are also being installed on both sides of the bridge so that in future it will be easier to carry out routine inspections and maintenance.

And better drainage has been added to the eastern footpath to minimise the risk of damage being caused by water penetration.

The blocks of granite that were damaged when a bus crashed into the bridge wall in July were retrieved from the riverbed last week and initial repairs are being made to them before the wall is rebuilt.

And while work is continuing to refurbish the pedestrian subway at the bridge’s northern end, the restoration continues off-site to its ornate Victorian lamp columns.

Transport spokesman Cllr Jonathan Cook said: “This has been another week of good progress. So far this has been a very well managed contract that has delivered really high quality engineering work on time and on budget.

“I’m delighted to say that the bridge looks in better shape with each day that passes and we remain firmly on course to meet our target of completing the job within the next few weeks.”
