The Independent Community Group has announced that it will be contesting the local elections on Thursday, 22nd May 2014.

It will field candidates in Isleworth and Syon wards, where it held all six seats prior to the local elections in 2010 at which independents and small party candidates were wiped out with the general election being held on the same day.

The ICG expects to have an interest in other wards beyond Isleworth and Syon, whether that be by fielding its own candidates or by endorsing others.  More information will be available on this in due course.

The residents’ group had earlier explored the possibility of remaining out of the electoral fray and instead acting as a “critical friend” to existing councillors, but the latter were not interested in such an arrangement, leaving participation in the election as the only really available option.

ICG Campaigns Manager Phil Andrews, a former Isleworth councillor, commented: “It really was a case of if you can’t join them, beat them.  Although we would have been happy to have worked in a different way, it was not to be and thankfully we have kept ourselves in a state of readiness throughout the inter-election period”.

The group intends make community empowerment a cornerstone of its programme, and will use the election period to campaign against closures of community facilities and cuts to essential services.

Brentford resident Dave Cox, former Chair of the Hounslow Federation of Tenants’ and Residents’ Associations (HFTRA) which represented tenants and leaseholders in 24,000 homes throughout the borough, has joined the Independent Community Group. ICG Chair Ian Speed commented: “Dave will be a tremendous asset in the ICG’s work to empower tenants and residents”.
