The most borrowed adult book in libraries across the borough is Fifty Shades Freed by Brentford author E L James, which was issued 117 times in the past year.

The next most popular adult book is The Official DSA Theory Test which was issued 100 times.

The top 10 most borrowed book overall were all children’s titles showing how popular and relevant libraries continue to be for young people. One of the popular Horrid Henry books topped out the list at 226 issues.

Book loving locals have been making the most of their local libraries this year.

Latest figures from John Laing Integrated Services, who look after the borough’s 11 libraries, show that so far this year 786,159 items have been issued across the borough – an increase of 33 per cent on the same period last year.

These are the highest figures for the borough since 2008, and items issued in July alone were 60 per cent higher than in 2012.

The libraries with the largest growth were Beavers Library (up 149 per cent), Hounslow Library (up 137 per cent) and Cranford Library (up 114 per cent).

Cllr Ajmer Grewal, cabinet member for leisure and public health at the council, said:

“We are proud that, despite massive cuts to our funding by the Government, we together with our partners, have been able to keep all our libraries open.

“These figures show just how highly local people value our libraries, and that our librarians are working hard to make sure they are providing people with a great service.

“The fact that children’s books are the most popular items issued is great to see, as we want to make sure we are encouraging young readers to being a lifetime of reading.”

Online renewals of borrowed items have grown from 42,010 in the Between January and July 2012, to 149,842 so far this year. Library members can also subscribe to receive an email reminder of when their books are about to go overdue to help avoid fines, simply by letting library staff know their email address on their next visit.
