Although graveyards aren’t intended to be hives of activity there has been very little going on at Isleworth Cemetery recently

One of the two public entrances on Park Road has been fenced off more than a week after work at the site was supposed to be complete.

A local resident commented that, while there were workers on the site when the project began, there has been little evidence of any progress since Easter.

A sign bearing the logo of Hounslow Council and Lampton Services Greenspace says that the entrance will be closed from 27 March to 7 April to allow the full restoration of the granite piers, iron gate and iron railings with working hours between 7.30am and 4pm.

It adds, “We thank you for your patience and look forward to opening the restored pedestrian entrance at the earliest opportunity.”

Christine Diwel of the Isleworth Society says that she is monitoring the work and that it is very far from being abandoned. Repair and repainting the iron gate and its supports has necessitated its removal but she is confident it will return in the next six weeks or so when the correct alignment and reconstruction of the attendant three pillars will also take place.

Isleworth Cemetery opened in 1880 when the Middlesex Chronicle claimed it “would become one of the prettiest burial places in London”. Renovation of the pedestrian gates dating from then is being undertaken to match work done in 2019. This has been enabled by a grant of around £22,000 from the council.

Hounslow Council says thas been a slight delay in the planned work timetable. All works to complete and open the pedestrian gate will be done next week. The sign is being updated to reflect this delay.
