A day care centre for people with mental health needs in Brentford has been extended and modernised. A ceremony to mark the completion of the ambitious project at Canal House in Brentford was attended by the Mayor of Hounslow, Cllr Felicity Barwood and Cllr Pamela Fisher, the lead member for adult social services and health.

Improving services for people with mental health issues is a key objective of the Hounslow Plan (2006-10), the Council’s four-year vision of development and improvement for the borough. The modernisation of Canal House, with new facilities and an ability to provide a greater array of services, also meets the requirements of the borough’s mental health strategy.

Cllr Pamela Fisher, lead member for adult social services and health, said: “The completion of this ambitious extension project at Canal House enhances its ability to provide a range of services that meets the needs of users, and an even better environment for people to come and feel at ease.”

Clement Smith, manager of Canal House, said: “We pride ourselves on providing a holistic and stimulating environment at Canal House to create a ‘feel good’ factor in our users, which is key to good mental health. We are all delighted the extension is completed and look forward to using it.”

Canal House offers a stigma-free environment for people to come. The extension has created

• A new kitchen, which means its out-of-hours and weekend service can be provided from the same place.

• New ramps and disabled toilet means it can provide a service to meet the needs of this client group.

• The new unit is spacious, so more activities can be offered, including keep fit classes. More room also means more space for open days and special celebrations.

Service users have been instrumental in planning and deciding what furniture and colour scheme was used in the extension to Canal House.

Canal House is located in London Road, Brentford, in the London borough of Hounslow. It is a day centre for people with mental health needs.
