A new scheme run by Brentford Bikes allows local businesses and individuals to try a cargo bike for a free period.

Cargo bikes are popular in other parts of Europe and allow the delivery of goods and services right up to the door without the hassle of parking. The scheme is run by local cycle training company London Bike Hub in association with the UK national cycle charity CTC and the European Cycle Logistics group.

The scheme started in August with a number of businesses signing up to hire the trikes, these have ranged from a garden business to transport tools to local jobs and remove the waste to the recycling depot without the need to hire vans with the associated costs. A local photographer is using another bike to move their finished work which can be quite large to local markets and events and allows her carry more goods easily and use the bike as a mobile stall.

The scheme has three trikes available for a limited time and users are given a short induction on how to use them before going about their business.

Demand has been high with a wide variety of businesses taking advantage and being allowed to dip their toe in the water of pedal powered delivery. The Brentford area is perfect for cycle deliveries with relatively short distances involved and a diverse range of goods and services that the local area provides.

The bikes will be at the Brentford Festival this Sunday (1st September) and appear regularly at Brentford Market on Sundays. For more details see www.brentfordbikes.org or contact info@brentfordbikes.org  or ring 0203 651 3361.
